Project Summary

Stourton Park & Ride was the third in a series of successful Park & Ride facilities across Leeds, with the primary driver to continue reducing traffic congestion and air pollution in the city centre. The facility operates all electric buses with zero emissions, and has 1,200 vehicle parking spaces, 26 electric vehicle charging spaces (with provision for additional), secure cycle and mobility scooter storage. The site is powered by a carport solar array with battery storage, making this the first fully solar powered park and ride in the UK. NPS Leeds were responsible for the multi-disciplinary design of the terminus building, the immediate landscape setting, and co-ordinated the electrical infrastructure within the wider site.

The two park & ride predecessors established the basic principles of a recognisable brand, including clock tower to promote wayfinding, use of modular construction for units that can be duplicated and standardised, and use of cast glass to glow on dark winter’s evenings. However, Stourton’s gateway site demanded something more bespoke to its setting without losing the sense of LCC Park & Ride brand identity. The area’s industrial heritage was referenced through the use of weathering steel and rough textured masonry, but is balanced against the sedum roof, green wall and newly planted extensive woodland surroundings. The terminus building and surroundings are fully accessible to all, including flush kerbs, disabled parking bays directly adjacent the entrance and a changing places facility.

NPS Leeds’ design team continued to bring their experience and expertise working alongside Leeds City Council on Elland Road and Temple Green park & rides. This expanded on Stourton to promote collaboration as part of the wider highways-based project team, interfacing with their BIM Level 2 protocols and conventions.

Stourton Park & Ride is part of Connecting Leeds’ ambition to improve public transport services in Leeds, provide better connectivity and reduce carbon emissions in the city.

The completed Park & Ride facility at Stourton has brought new employment in sustainable industries, reduced the cost of commuting for locals and improved public transport links.
